(Do not go into the Cottonwood campground immediately left after the highway.). The road is washboard in places. Persist. It is worth the effort. Follow the signs to Cimarron Recreation Area. After entering the campground go immediately to the right and take the first left. The horse corrals are a couple hundred yards down on the left.

A hidden gem. Basically a river bottom with brush and cottonwood trees. After turning off KS 27, go east 4 miles to the campground. There is another campground immediately off the road with a sign that says \”Cottonwood.\” No horse facility there. Follow signs to Cimarron Recreation Area. After entering the campground go immediately to the right and take the first left. The horse corrals are a couple hundred yards down on the left. They are about 20×20 and rarely used. We had to chop down tall weeds in OCT when we were there. The area has several nice ponds but the horse site has its own water spicket. No picnic table or fire ring though. The riding is in easy grassland roads plus almost unlimited cross country riding. Surface off the road is sandy. Road is gravel. We put boots on our horses. We stayed 3 days and will probably come back. Fee is $7/night, half off for Federal Senior Pass etc. Fishing is available in the stocked ponds.
